Gateway Programme for male survivors of domestic abuse
Domestic abuse can leave survivors feeling confused, disempowered, and alone. At Equation, we’re here to support you on your journey to safety and recovery.
Our Independent Domestic Violence Advocates can help you enhance your immediate safety and wellbeing, while also helping with practical challenges such as accessing court services or securing safe housing. However, we understand that even after the abuse ends or safety improves, it can still be challenging to move forward. Feelings of disempowerment and confusion are often left behind impacting your long-term wellbeing.
That’s why we offer the Gateway Programme, a specialised eight-week peer support group designed for male and LGBTQ+ survivors of domestic abuse. This programme is led by experienced domestic abuse advocates and is tailored to support lasting recovery. We provide separate groups for men and LGBTQ+ participants to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all.
Why join the programme and what it covers
- Meet and share experiences with people who understand what you’ve been through
- Learn more about why and how abuse happens in relationships
- Learn to identify behaviours used to manipulate and control
- Examine how abusive relationships affect parenting and children, and discover resources for support
- Increase your safety and learn strategies to protect yourself
- Understand why leaving an abusive relationship can be so difficult
- Reflect on the choices available to you and plan your next steps
How to join the programme
The Gateway Programme is available to male survivors, regardless of whether support has been accessed from our Independent Domestic Violence Advocacy Service. To join:
- You can refer yourself or be referred by a professional
- After we receive your referral, we’ll contact you to schedule an assessment session where you can ask questions and ensure the programme is right for you
- The programme is delivered near Nottingham city centre and is currently offered in-person only.
Please Note: There may be a waiting list to join the programme. If urgent support needs or risks are identified during your assessment, we will address these before you start.
