About this event

Technology & Domestic Abuse Practitioners Network

Date: Thursday 31st August, 14:00 – 16:30

Location: Microsoft Teams

Do you work with survivors or perpetrators of domestic abuse? Do you need to know about technology and domestic abuse in you line of work? This session will aim to equip you with information, knowledge, and guidance on the use of technology as part of domestic abuse, known as ‘tech abuse’.

Technology is evolving so fast that it is hard to keep up to date. Technology is driving new forms of domestic abuse with the countless ways it can facilitate a perpetrator’s coercive and controlling behaviours. This is a practice and tech-focused network event that will help you to build skills for supporting survivors or working with perpetrators of domestic abuse.

The session will be led by our guest speaker, Katy Brookfield, and will cover:

• Statistical data on the experiences of 141 women with lived experience of tech abuse in the UK, including the types of abuses they experienced and how these changed pre and post separation

• Information on the challenges and barriers women faced when interacting with support services due to being under digital surveillance

• Anonymised case examples of women who were prevented from accessing services until after they had escaped their relationship, and discussion around the implications of this for risk and risk management

• Examples of strategies used by women and support worker which enabled women to engage with services, despite being under digital surveillance

There will be an opportunity for a Q&A, and discussion groups to encourage practitioners and think about how to put learning into practice.

If you have anything you would like to share during this network meeting in relation to tech abuse then please get in touch by Monday 28th August: techabuse@equation.org.uk. This can be anything from an upcoming event or a helpful tech abuse tool you have found to be useful in your line of work.

About Katy Brookfield:

Katy Brookfield is an ESRC funded postgraduate researcher at the University of Nottingham, in the School of Sociology and Social Policy. Her PhD looks at women’s experiences of technology-facilitated domestic abuse in the UK, and how being subjected to digital surveillance impacts on their interactions with support services.

To ensure you are contacted about future events, subscribe to our tech abuse newsletter through our website by ticking the ‘Domestic abuse and technology’ box under email preferences.
