· Share practical tips and strategies for effectively supporting minoritised women who have experienced sexual violence
· Introduce local sexual violence services and their referral pathways, with a focus on minoritised survivor help-seeking and disclosure
Reclaiming Voice
Ravi Thiara is Professor of Sociology at the University of Warwick and was previously Director of a dedicated research centre on violence against women and children at the university. She has conducted pioneering national and international research in this area over the last three decades and also been involved in policy and practice development. Ravi has a particular expertise in gendered violence against those in marginalised and racialised communities (ethnicity and disability) and continues to work for change for women and children.
The presentation will draw on the findings from the first national study of sexual violence and minoritised women – Reclaiming Voice – conducted in collaboration with Imkaan (Sumanta Roy), a second-tier organisation of minoritised ‘by and for’ organisations. The research explored sexual violence and its impact on wellbeing, disclosure patterns and help-seeking, and the responses minoritised survivors receive when they approach support services.
Sumanta Roy is the Head of Research at Imkaan advocating for more informed research, policy and practice on violence against black, minoritised women and girls. She specialises in conducting social policy influencing research which takes a participatory, grassroots approach on VAWG, equalities and social justice. She has over 20 years of experience of delivering impactful research for national, local government, funding bodies in collaboration with academic bodies and specialist voluntary / community sector organisations. Sumanta has taken a lead role at Imkaan in establishing Imkaan’s research arm and helping to raise awareness of issues including sexual violence against minoritised women through collaborative research with Ravi Thiara, University of Warwick (Reclaiming Voice, 2020) and more recently as an advisor on a joint Rape Crisis England & Wales (RCEW) and Imkaan report on asylum-seeking women and sexual violence (Not Safe Here, 2024).
