This two-hour session with aim to equip you with information, knowledge, and guidance on the use of technology as part of domestic abuse

Do you work in the domestic abuse sector with survivors or perpetrators of domestic abuse? Are you a practitioner, manager, commissioner, volunteer, policy maker? Or are you just here to increase your knowledge in technology in relation to domestic abuse? Then this event is for you.

About this event

Welcome to the launch of our first Practitioners’ Network event. This two-hour session with aim to equip you with information, knowledge, and guidance on the use of technology as part of domestic abuse, known as ‘tech abuse’.

We know that the use of technology is evolving so fast that it is hard to keep up to date. We want this to be a space where you can easily access and understand information about tech abuse as this is posing a new risk for survivors with the countless ways technology can enable a perpetrator to coerce and control.

This is a practice and tech-focused network event for helping you to build skills for supporting survivors with regards to tech abuse and these events are available for anyone who may find this information useful, particularly those who have contact at work with survivors as well as perpetrators.

This first event will be led by our guest speaker, Demelza Luna Reaver, a PhD candidate from University College London (UCL), the world-leading research UK University. Demelza’s research focuses on the use of technology as a tool to facilitate abuse within intimate partner relationships. The session will provide you with:

• An introduction to the Practitioners’ Network

• An introduction into tech abuse and the various devices that are used by perpetrators in domestic abuse, including an introduction into the Internet of Things (IoT) devices

• Information around the impact of tech abuse on survivors and the implications for safety planning with survivors

• An overview of the tech abuse project work we are doing here at Equation

• Opportunities for questions

We also want this to be a space where we focus on tech abuse topics relevant to you and your line of work so we will invite those who wish to suggest topics, e.g., a specific device that will be useful for us to cover in future sessions.

The Practitioners’ Network will be held every 2-3 months. To ensure you are contacted about future events, subscribe to our tech abuse newsletter through our website by ticking the ‘Domestic abuse and technology’ box under email preferences.

Please be aware that this session will contain some reference to types of domestic abuse. It is recommended that the session is attended in a quiet and confidential space. If you are impacted by the content of the session, you will be provided with points of contact as part of your follow on resources, and reference will be made to support options in the session.

Information on support is also available on Equation’s Website: Get Help | Equation
