1 in 10 men experience stalking, but why is it harder for men to accept and to do something about it?

The National Stalking Helpline figures show that 1 in 10 men experience stalking in their lifetime, with an estimated 85% of victims not reporting incidents.

According to a 2020 research study, one of the reasons men don’t report being stalked is out of fear of not being taken seriously or believed. Another is that men simply don’t expect it to happen to them. And when it does, they’re less likely to recognise that what is happening, is stalking.

Stalking is a pattern of persistent and unwanted behaviour that can make someone feel pestered, threatened or scared. It happens when the person stalking becomes fixated or obsessed with someone and it’s a criminal offence. It can build up slowly over time and be subtle and hard to recognise or explain. When it happens, it can make the person it’s happening to feel that it will never stop.

Our Stalking Advisory Service (non-domestic abuse)

Stalking can happen to anyone and can be experienced very differently.  Our Stalking Advisory Service is here for men, or those identifying as men, experiencing stalking that’s not happening as part of wider domestic abuse. Usually that means people who don’t know their stalker.

If you’re being stalked as part of ongoing domestic abuse, you can get help from our Domestic Abuse Advocacy and Support Service.

We’re here to listen and work with you to safety plan, give you emotional support, help you gather evidence and explore ways to make you feel safer.
