For anyone living with domestic abuse, reaching the point of asking for help is a huge and daunting step but for men this is even harder.
When it comes to reporting abuse or getting support, men are less likely than women to take action. There are lots of reasons for this. Society puts a lot of pressure on men to be strong and sort out their own problems. There can be fear of being judged or not being believed, fear that they’ll be blamed for the abuse, embarrassment that it’s happening or worry that speaking up might result in losing contact with children.
At the centre of this is the perception that domestic abuse doesn’t happen to men but the reality is – it does.
However strong we are, we all need a little help sometimes
It may seem daunting asking for help, especially when you don’t know what to expect. We understand this here at Equation. Everyone is entitled to get support when they need it and that’s what we’re here for.
Domestic Abuse Helpline Service
If you’re made to feel scared, controlled or unable to make your own decisions by your partner, ex-partner or a family member, this could be abuse. Your relationship doesn’t have to be physically violent to be abusive.
Our helpline is here for men, or those identifying as men who are experiencing domestic abuse. If you want to talk things through, confidentially, our team are fully trained, and here to listen whenever you are ready.
It’s your call – you’re in control
We know that making that call can feel like a big step, but you can choose to share as much or as little as you like. You don’t have to give your real name and you can call us anonymously.
Helpline support is led by you, because you are the best person to make decisions about your life. We want you to feel that you have options and that you’re not alone.
If you’re worried about someone else
You can also call us if you’re worried about someone else – a friend, family member, or someone you work with. If you’re unsure what to do, want to run your thoughts past someone, get some advice, or speak to someone who will hear your worries and take them seriously, then talk to us.
