Reel Equality Disclaimer

Reel Equality’s usual programming is mainly focused on telling empowering, women-centred stories, to redress the imbalance of representation of gender on screen, and to help end sexism off screen. For special screenings, Reel Equality may choose movies that veer from our typical programme choices where we think themes addressed in the film are beneficial to empowering our community to end abuse. These film choices may contain scenes that some viewers would find distressing.

Reel Equality is a campaign run by domestic abuse and sexual violence prevention charity, Equation. Equation recognises that a person of any gender can be impacted by domestic abuse or sexual violence and believes everyone has the right to a life, free from abuse. However, it remains an indisputable fact that when it comes to abuse, the majority of survivors and victims are women, and the majority of perpetrators are men. Equation’s main focus when it comes to prevention is to educate our community with the knowledge and tools needed to bring about the day when abuse no longer exists.

On occasions where we present a film that includes disturbing scenes, we will:

  • Ensure our screening is promoted with suitable trigger warnings.
  • Provide information on the content warnings via our own or a third-party website.
  • Provide a quiet space for audience members impacted by distressing scenes.
  • Ensure professionals trained and experienced in providing emotional support to survivors of abuse are available at the safe space.
  • Ensure resources are on-hand to signpost to services for survivors of abuse.
