Choices: Early intervention for young men

Choices supports young men who are at risk of displaying, or being impacted by, negative attitudes and behaviours that increase the risk of domestic abuse. Sessions build self-esteem, challenge harmful thinking, and help participants make positive choices in their relationships.

Who is Choices for

Choices is for small groups of young men, across a range of year groups, identified by school staff as displaying, or being impacted by, abusive behaviour or harmful attitudes towards women and girls. We’ll agree delivery to suit your school.

What happens in each session?

Across eight sessions, young men explore self-esteem, managing feelings, healthy relationships, consent, and what it means to “be a man”. The final session is a creative project the group presents themselves, bringing their learning together.

Project structure

We agree delivery directly with your school, including group size, timing and number of sessions. We’ve delivered Choices to a range of age groups, not only Year 10, so we can flex it to suit your students.

What happens when you get in touch?

You can contact us to talk through referral criteria, timings and cost, with no obligation. We’ll answer your questions, agree next steps together, and arrange dates that work for your school.

How do you measure success?

Each young person completes an evaluation form individually with a facilitator during the final session, helping us measure progress. We aim to share an impact report with every school once delivery is complete.

What does Choices involve?

Choices is for small groups of boys, across a range of year groups, identified by school staff as displaying, or being impacted by, abusive behaviour or harmful attitudes towards women and girls. We agree delivery, including group size and timing, directly with your school.

Sessions one to seven each explore a different topic: self-esteem, choices and consequences, managing feelings and anger, healthy relationships (including how to spot the signs of abuse and control), personal space, understanding consent and raising awareness of harmful sexual behaviours, expectations of manhood, and positive goal setting. Sessions are collaborative and interactive, combining group activities, role-play and self-reflection.

In session eight, participants develop and present a piece of creative work decided by the young people themselves. This is often done in collaboration with local partners, such as creating an art piece using spray paints, a recording at a local community studio, or making a podcast or mini film.
