Free training for local professionals

Why choose our multi-agency training?

Our training is free for professionals in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, practical and built on more than 20 years of frontline experience. It’s funded by Nottingham Community Partnership and Nottingham County Commissioners, so there’s no cost to attend.

Whether you’re new to the subject or want to build specialist skills, our courses are designed for professionals and volunteers across health, education, housing, criminal justice and the voluntary sector.

Foundation courses include Understanding and Responding to Domestic Abuse, Introduction to Domestic Abuse, and Recognising and Responding to Perpetrators. Specialist courses include Coercive Control, Improving Skills for Working with Survivors, and Working with LGBTQ+ Survivors of Domestic Abuse.

  • Foundation courses for anyone new to the subject.
  • Specialist training, including coercive control and LGBTQ+ survivor support.
  • Access to over 20 subject areas, completely free.
Answers for you

Frequently asked questions

We have collected all our frequently asked questions below to save you any worry or anxiety when attending our training. If your query is not answered below please get in touch with us at training@equation.org.uk and we will answer as soon as possible.

I work/volunteer outside of Nottingham/shire, can I attend the training?

Free places are only available to workers or volunteers in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Anyone who works or volunteers outside of Nottingham/shire will be required to pay for an out of area ticket on our local sessions, or you can attend our national sessions.

You can find our currently available national sessions via our Eventbrite page.

Our booking page asks for a Nottingham/shire work address when signing up for a ticket, and this is monitored.

We understand that sometimes organisations may have a non-Nottingham/shire work address, but do support service users or clients in Nottingham/shire. If this is the case please make us aware, or make a note in the accessibility needs section of the booking form via Eventbrite.

I am a student in Nottingham, can I attend the training?

You can attend our community/bystander approaches training session and other community awareness sessions.

Our other training sessions are not open to general members of the public as they are funded to be free to professionals and volunteers in Nottingham/shire.

Can I sign up for training with a personal email address, rather than a professional/work email address?

We ask that you sign up for our training with a professional/ work email address.

Signing up with a personal email address may result in your booking getting cancelled.

For bystander and community sessions personal emails addresses can be used.

Is this training right for me?

We advise anyone new to Equation’s training courses to start with our foundation courses. For frontline professionals, we recommend our Understanding and Responding to Domestic Violence and Abuse course, and for non-frontline professionals our Introduction to Domestic Abuse course.

Upon completion of one of our foundation courses, you are welcome to sign up to our additional specialist courses.

If you are still unsure, please contact: training@equation.org.uk

Will there be a break?

During three hour+ sessions there will be two, 10-15 minutes breaks scheduled. For two-hour sessions there will be a minimum of one 10-15 minutes of break.

During face-to-face full day sessions there will be a minimum of two 15 minute breaks plus a lunch break of a minimum of 30 minutes.

All delegates can take screen breaks, time-out breaks and accessibility breaks when needed.

Will I receive a certificate?

We only provide certificates upon request.

I want to attend the training, but can’t attend the whole session/have to leave early?

We would always advise that you attend the full session or attend an alternative date where you will be able to attend the whole session. Please be aware if you leave your session early, you will not be able to request a certificate of your attendance/completion of the course. In order to completion the course a delegate must attend the majority of the session i.e. not arrive more than 15 minutes late and not leave more than 15 minutes early.

For full day face-to-face sessions trainers will not allow delegates to start the session if they are more than 20 minutes late (in face to face sessions this may be waived in exceptional circumstances e.g. traffic jams, transport delays, accidents, childcare/ caring responsibilities etc).

In some circumstances it may be suggested to delegates to re-attend half of a full day session.
If you know you cannot be at the session on time or for the whole session then book another date.

I can’t attend this session anymore, when will the next one be? Can I rebook?

Yes, you can rebook. All of the information is available on our Eventbrite page, or you can sign up to our e-news to stay up to date with new training course dates

Can I book one place, but my colleague(s) and I watch on one laptop?

We ask that everyone books a individual ticket via Eventbrite, even if you are sharing a screen/laptop. We do prefer that everyone joins on their own separate screen/laptop due to breakout room activities.

I live in Nottingham/shire, but I am not currently in work or volunteer, can I still attend the training?

If you live or work in Nottingham/shire but you are not working or volunteering in services, you can attend our community and bystander approaches training session and community awareness sessions – these will be clearly marked in Eventbrite.

Our other training sessions are not open to general members of the public as the sessions are commissioned for workers and volunteers, and the content is developed to reflect the needs of practitioners.

Can you sign me up for a training session?

Due to the amount of personal information we ask for on the booking form, we are not able to sign you up for a place on our training session.

Instead, we ask delegates to fill out a booking form themselves via Eventbrite. which you can find here.

If you cannot fill out the form due to accessibility needs, please reach out to us via email: training@equation.org.uk

I work in Nottingham City but can only attend the County training dates?

If this is an issue for you, please contact us at training@equation.org.uk.

If there are spaces available, this may be possible, but we will need to authorise this depending on availability.

Will I receive the presentation slides? And when?

You will only receive the presentation slides upon completion of a survey.

You will receive the presentation slides along with additional resources in an automatic email from the training@equation.org.uk account.

Do I need to participate/have my camera on?

Whilst we always advise and prefer our delegates to have their cameras on during the session, we understand that this may not always be possible for some people with accessibility needs.

For breakout rooms and interactive activities, we do strongly encourage delegates to ensure that cameras are on, if possible, to ensure that the breakout groups are able to function effectively.

We also ask for online sessions, you attend in an private and confidential space.

What if I need to cancel my place? What’s your cancellation policy?

You can cancel your place via Eventbrite upon 24 hours before the start of the course you have booked on. Please be aware that any emails sent to training@equation.org.uk regarding cancelling your place are not accepted.

Late cancellations and non-attendance may result in an administration charge, and your line manager will be contacted.

If you wish to offer your place to someone else in your organisation please let us know a minimum of 24 hours before the session by contacting the training@equation.org.uk e-mail with the delegates name, email address and role.

I have booked to attend an online session, when will I get the meeting link?

You will receive the link to the meeting and pre-training information at least 24 hours before the session starts. If you cannot find this email, please check your junk inbox.

You may also find the meeting link via the Eventbrite page or in your registration email from Eventbrite.

How many people from my organisation can attend the training?

For remote sessions, no more than 7 people from one organisation. If you are part of a department for a large organisations such as NHS, no more than 7 people from each department can attend.

For face-to-face session no more than 3 people can attend from one organisation.
