Supporting social care professionals

Working with families affected by domestic abuse

Working with domestic abuse can be complex. Risk can change quickly, and information may be held across different services and professionals. We offer specialist training, resources and advice, as well as referral routes into our domestic abuse and perpetrator services, so you can feel more confident supporting families affected by domestic abuse.

Capacity and workload

Caseloads have improved in recent years, but pressure hasn’t gone away. The average children’s social worker caseload fell to 15.2 in September 2025 — the third consecutive annual fall — but sickness absence rose for a second year running (DofE 2025)

Missed signs and professional curiosity

It’s a theme that comes up again and again in Domestic Homicide Reviews. A 2025 analysis of DHRs found recurring failures of holistic thinking — including a lack of practitioner curiosity. (Gunby, Chantler, Baker & Heyes, British Journal of Criminology, 2025)

Risk assessment and information-sharing

Even where risk assessments are completed well, the picture doesn’t always travel between the professionals who need it.

None of this reflects on any individual’s skill or commitment — it reflects how hard this work is. Equation’s training and resources are designed to make the whole system stronger around you.

How Equation can help

Whether you need advice on a case, training for your team, resources to use with children and young people, or a referral into one of our services, we can help.

Our free training helps you build confidence in recognising the signs of domestic abuse, assessing and supporting survivors, and responding to perpetrators. Most people start with Understanding and Responding to Domestic Abuse, as our other sessions build on this foundation. You can then explore more specific topics, including MARAC and DASH RIC Awareness, Domestic Abuse and Coercive Control, and Working with Children and Young People Impacted by Domestic Abuse.

Training is free for workers and volunteers based in Nottingham city and Nottinghamshire. We also offer bespoke half-day and full-day sessions, tailored to your team’s specific needs

Frequently asked questions

If you are a social care practitioner or professional and have questions about how Equation can support or work with you, please read the most common answers to queries below.

How do I make an enquiry or a referral?

Visit out Make a referral page and use the form to send us a message.

Can we refer the whole family — support for the survivor, the children, and the person using abusive behaviour — at the same time?

Yes. Survivors can receive support directly from us or our partners at Juno Women’s Aid and Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid, children and young people can access our education and toolkit resources, and the person using abusive behaviour can be referred into Your Choice Project — all running in parallel where it’s safe and appropriate to do so.

What if we’re not sure whether what we’re seeing counts as domestic abuse?

That uncertainty is exactly what our Understanding and Responding to Domestic Abuse session is designed for, and you’re welcome to call our team to talk through a specific situation. Trust your professional curiosity — if something doesn’t feel right, it’s worth exploring further.

Is your training really free for our team?

Yes, for workers and volunteers based in Nottingham city and Nottinghamshire. There’s a charge for workers outside this area. We also offer bespoke full or half-day sessions if your team needs something tailored but this is an additional cost.

Can we refer someone to Your Choice Project if there are ongoing criminal or family court proceedings?

Not currently — this is one of the programme’s eligibility requirements, since it’s a voluntary behaviour change programme rather than a court-mandated one. We can still talk through what other support might be appropriate in the meantime.

Can you deliver training in-house for our whole team?

Yes. Alongside our scheduled sessions, we offer bespoke full and half-day training built around your team’s specific needs and areas of development.
