Venues and Businesses: Supporting communities affected by domestic abuse

Domestic abuse and sexual violence affects people in every community.

You don’t need to be a specialist to make a difference. With the right knowledge and tools, your venue or business can become a place where people feel safer.

Equation offers bespoke training and resources for venues and businesses.

Quick guidance for Venues and Businesses

Most people witnessing something that doesn’t feel right want to act they just don’t know how. Equation can give your team the skills and confidence to safely intervene when they see behaviour that could cause harm.

Bystander intervention training is valuable for venues in the night-time economy and hospitality settings.

Domestic abuse awareness training

This session helps teams understand what domestic abuse is, how to spot the signs, and how to respond safely and confidently. It covers coercive control, financial abuse, and technology-facilitated abuse.

Your team will learn what to look out for, what to say, and where to direct someone who needs help.

Sexual violence awareness training

This session builds understanding of sexual violence — what it is, how it affects people, and how your team can respond in a way that is safe, respectful, and trauma-informed.

It is for anyone who may come into contact with a survivor in a customer-facing role or a management role.

Safe Space training

If your venue is part of the Best Bar None accreditation in Nottingham, Safe Space training supports your team to understand their role in keeping customers safe.

Includes training on Ask for Angela, so your staff know how to respond when someone asks for help and what to do next.

Frequently asked questions

Not sure where to start? Here are answers to the questions we hear most from venues and businesses. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.

We’re a small business. Is this training relevant to us?

Yes. Domestic abuse affects people in every workplace — regardless of the size of the organisation. You don’t need a dedicated HR team or a large budget to take action. We work with businesses of all sizes and will tailor the training to suit your team.

Do we have to book all the sessions, or can we choose just one?

You can choose. Our training is bespoke — you might want a single bystander intervention session for front-of-house staff, or a fuller package combining awareness and Safe Spaces training for the whole team. We’ll work with you to build something that fits.

Can the training be delivered online?

Yes. All of our sessions are available both in person and online. We’ll work with you to choose the format that suits your team best.

How do we book?

Complete our bespoke training request form and a member of our team will be in touch to discuss your needs and next steps.

We’re a pub or bar. What does Safe Spaces training involve?

Safe Spaces training prepares your team to recognise when a customer may need help, and to respond safely and discreetly. It includes training on the Ask for Angela scheme — a nationally recognised way for someone to signal they need assistance without drawing attention to themselves. If your venue is working towards Best Bar None accreditation in Nottingham City, we can make sure your team is fully prepared.

How long does the training take?

That depends on what you choose and how it’s delivered. In-person sessions run for approximately half a day. Online sessions typically run for 1.5 to 2 hours. For bespoke packages combining more than one session, we’ll agree timings with you when we discuss your needs.

How much does it cost?

Costs vary depending on the sessions you choose and the size of your team. Some of our training for venues and businesses may be fully funded — get in touch and we’ll let you know what’s available for you.
